Poker Worry Over UIGEA May be
Unfounded
When the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 was signed
into law by U.S. President Bush in October, many online poker rooms
scrambled to extract themselves from their U.S. facing operations,
but many poker industry experts are still asking why. In essence the
act and law make accepting transactions regarded to online gambling
illegal, but only if the state where the transaction originates in
already has a law on its books making online gambling illegal, and
somewhere near half of the states in the U.S. do not. With some online
poker rooms returning to the U.S. markets they left behind in October,
the jury is still out on how much the UIGEA will impact the poker
industry.
