   Joe Montana is on an intellectual high and three days from a physical high on Jan. 28, 1990, when he leads the 49ers to a 55-10 pounding of the Denver Broncosin Super Bowl XXIV. John Elway by the way, is on a double low — physically and emotionally.

Billie Jean King is on an emotional and intellectual high when she pastes Bobby Riggs in the Houston Astrodome on Sept. 20, 1973. It probably helped that Bobby Riggs was on an emotional and intellectual low the very same day.

Soviet Major Yuri Gagarin is on a physical and emotional high when he becomes the first human to travel into space on April 12, 1961, aboard the spacecraft Vostok, The historic flight also made him the first human to orbit the planet.

In what has been dubbed the “miracle on the mat,” U.S. Olympian Rulon Gardner beats Alexander Karelin, the dominating three-time Olympic champion of Russia, to win Olympic gold in the Greco-Roman heavyweight division. On the day of the victory, Sept. 27, 2000, Gardner was on a double high, both intellectually and physically. His opponent was experiencing a critical intellectual and physical day and an emotional low.

Thomas Alva Edison is on a physical and emotional high and six days from an intellectual high when he invents the first electric incandescent lamp of practical value on Oct. 21, 1879.

The Lows...
   Mike Tyson is on a double low physically and emotionally when he is knocked out by Buster Douglas, a 42 to 1 underdog, on Feb. 11, 1990.

Vice President Dick Cheney is on an intellectual and emotional low when he accidentally shoots and wounds a fellow hunter and Republican campaign contributor during a quail hunt on Feb. 13, 2006.

Former FEMA chief Michael Brown is on an emotional and physical low when Hurricane Katrina hits on Aug. 29, 2005. Brown’s failure to act brings him under fire and he later resigns.

Ernest Hemingway commits suicide on July 2, 1961. The famous author and journalist is experiencing a double low — physically and emotionally — while his intellectual cycle is just beginning to move out of the critical zone.

Ben Hogan loses the 1955 U.S. Open as he enters an emotional and physical critical cycle. He is beaten by an unknown underdog, Jack Fleck, in what is still the most shocking upset in golf history. Fleck was experiencing both an emotional high and an intellectual high that was moving upward.

The Criticals...
    John F. Kennedy's intellectual cycle is critical (crossing the line and going down) when he is assassinated on Nov. 22, 1963. He is warned not to go to Dallas but fails to heed the advice.

Lance Armstrong’s physical and emotional cycles have just crossed the line into negative when he narrowly misses a catastrophic collision on his way to the Tour de France finish line on July 24, 2005. A few seconds later, Armstrong seals his first place finish.

On Feb. 18, 2001, Dale Earnhart Sr., 49, is on an emotional low and his physical cycle is critical (right at the midline) when he dies in a last-lap crash at the Daytona 500 International Speedway.

Amelia Earhart’s intellectual cycle is critical and her emotional cycle is low when she pilots her airplane on July 2, 1937. It is her last known flight; Earhart is never seen again.

On the date of his assassination, April 14, 1865, President Lincoln is experiencing a critical period. He is emotionally and intellectually low and continuing to trend downward. Physically, he is low and entering a critical point in the cycle.
